The celebration broke out in Congress party after the Supreme Court stayed over Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in 2019 defamation case with regard to ‘Modi Surname’ remarks.

Thus, Rahul Gandhi’s Parliamentary membership has been now reinstated with a Lok Sabha Secretariat’s notification stating that Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as a Lok Sabha member has been revoked.

He  was welcomed from several party leaders in Parliament as the Monsoon session is going on.

It may be mentioned here that Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Lok Sabha member on March 23 after a Gujarat Court convicted him in a defamation case over his ‘Modi Surname’ comments and two years jail sentence was awarded.

Mallikarjun Kharge, president congress party termed the reinstate of Rahul Gandhi’s Parliamentary membership as ‘welcome step’.

“The decision to reinstate Shri @RahulGandhi as an MP is a welcome step. It brings relief to the people of India, and especially to Wayanad. Whatever time is left of their tenure, BJP and Modi Govt should utilize that by concentrating on actual governance rather than denigrating Democracy by targeting opposition leaders,” tweeted, congress president.

Supreme Court stayed Rahul Gandhi’s conviction on August 4 in a 2019 defamation case over ‘Modi surname’ comments. Apex Court noted that the trail judge of a Surat Court had not provided enough reasons to impose maximum sentence of two years. Rahul  Gandhi, MP from Wayanad Lak Sabha constituency in Kerala had been disqualified this year for his conviction.

The Congress Party had moved to Supreme Court seeking to stay over his conviction and his appeal was heard and finally revoked his conviction.
