Hyderabad: The circulating videos on social networking sites and floating rumors of increasing Lumpy skin disease in cattle, compel several families to avoid eating ‘Beef’ in Hyderabad.
Several families, who used to prefer beef first with every loaf; but now they hesitate to eat it and prefer the alternate one.
A large number of people in their reactions saw eating beef may be unsafe for their health and they do not want to take any risk amid ongoing speculation of Lumpy skin disease in the cattle and many have completely avoided enjoying ‘Beef’.
In fact, Lumpy skin disease is an infectious viral disease of cattle, which seldom occurs in epizootic form. The disease is characterized by the eruption of nodules in the skin, which may occur the whole of the animals’ body.
“We have completely avoided eating beef ever since the videos of some cattle roaming around in Hyderabad with lumpy skin disease. Though, the beef selling and buying continued at many places in Hyderabad and at some places the prices have also been reduced by Rs 100 on per kg,’’ Told one of the residents, Younous from Karwan.
Taking strong exception against the viral infection in the cattle and GHMC veterinary officials’ apathy towards the issue, Telangana Telugu Desam Party (TTDP) alleged that the people were being misled in this regard and no one is to check the beef at the shops being sold out.
“Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Veterinary authorities are misleading the people by hiding the certain facts with regard to lumpy skin disease found in the cattle. The matter, however, was taken up with the officials concerned and the veterinary section team claimed to have attended and kept the diseased animal under treatment in isolation and a fine imposed on the owner for letting out the diseased animal,’’ said Mohammed Ahmed, TDP, GHMC, Minority, vice-president.
He further notified that the cattle were being slaughtered behind the doors at certain places in the old city of Hyderabad. Such places reportedly are not being taken into consideration to check the cattle. He, however, urged GHMC Veterinary officials to carry out a special drive and check the beef being sold out at the shops without any further delay.
“It is a matter of public health and several families have dropped the beef, in fear of disease being found in the cattle. In case of an outbreak of infection found in the cattle then GHMC Veterinary Department will be accountable,’’ added Mr. Ahmed.
Another resident Syed Sohail aired the similar concern over the beef selling at the market and said that his entire family stopped eating beef at home. “We know that the disease still exists in the cattle and authorities do not come out with satisfactory clarification in this regard. But one thing is clear that they might be hiding some fact behind this issue,’’
One of the ‘Beef’ shop owners Afzel told Voiceup Media that there was no such infection found in the cattle in Hyderabad and the beef is being sold out as usual in the market.
