Hyderabadi Haleem wins ‘Most Popular GI’ Award in India

Hyderabad, October 17: ‘Hyderabad Haleem’ has yet again garnered recognition at the national level by winning the ‘Most Popular GI’ award in India.

The award commissioned by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry was presented by Minister of Commerce and Industry Mr Piyush Goyal at Dr Ambedkar International Center in New Delhi on Saturday. The award adds another feather to Hyderabad which won the greenest city award at the international level the same day.

In 2010, Pista House became the first organization in India to be accorded the Geographical Indication (GI) status for its Hyderabad Haleem meaning no other city or state can make or market its Haleem as ‘Hyderabadi Haleem’.

The wheat-based recipe was voted the most popular choice in an online poll conducted from August through October by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India in the food category.

Pista House Managing Director Mr. M.A. Majeed, who is also the President of Hyderabad Haleem Makers Association, received the award in person.

Haleem is an exquisite delicacy incredibly popular among people of all ages. GI Attorney Mr S. Ravi IPR Attorney and Geographical Indications Consultant said “people from all over India and abroad voted the Hyderabad Haleem as their favorite”. He thanked the people for their participation in the poll.
